Thunderstorms, possibly accompanied by hail, with heavy localised rainfall over a short period and gusts of wind up to 60 km/h.
Our advice
- Thunderstorms can be accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and hail.
- At events, theme parks and outdoor activities: follow the organisers’ instructions (but also use your own judgement).
- As soon as you hear thunder, you are at risk. Lightning can strike even whilst the rain is still far away.
- Avoid open fields, tall trees and water. Do not use metal objects, such as golf clubs or bicycles.
- A lightning strike is life-threatening. Find a safe place to take shelter; for example, in a building or your car.
- If the strike is very close by, check for fire and short circuits.
- Adjust your driving behaviour, keep your distance and drive more slowly in heavy rain.
- Stay away from trees and woods during a thunderstorm. Never take shelter under a tree.

- Be aware of falling branches and loose debris. So stay clear of trees and loose objects.
- The strongest gusts occur in open areas and between (tall) buildings.
- Around the house: loose objects in gardens and on balconies can cause damage.
- At events, theme parks and outdoor activities: follow the organisers’ instructions (but also use your own judgement).
- In traffic: adjust your speed and keep your distance. Empty caravans and trailers may sway.
- Cyclists and motorcyclists: be aware of sudden gusts of wind which could cause you to fall or suddenly veer off course.
